Me coming into the homecoming pep rally. As school
president, I was supposed
to escort the queen on the homecoming court. I skipped my last senior football game
and went to a concert.
LORIAN CHRONICLES 1/84
I was getting into harmonics and lots of feedback textures during this period, and practicing all the time, not at all concerned about passing school. Teaching the Gore the bass, and playing around with some home made tapes.
I was trying to get up some easy-to-play new tunes to try with prospective bandmembers which in the end turned into this album. It also contains reworked numbers from earlier songwriting sessions, which is how I came about the name of the album. Big on the Beat & Powerchord, this one goes to prove sometimes simpliest is best.
CRYSTAL SERPENT 5/84
Crystal Serpent set the tone for many years to come concerning my band and recording projects; a blend of progressive punk, industrial and atmospheric styles. I had finally taught a friend of mine to play bass and found a killer drummer, so we played a big variety of past stuff and most of Crystal Serpent . This was one of my first big tries to give away as many home made jam tapes on these tunes as possible.
Now that summer had arrived and I had got out of high school for good, I attempted to get serious with music and began spending most of my money on Underground Records and making tapes to hand out. Theoria playing live was a great platform to spread the recordings. This was not a good time to be trying to make a living as an original punk band - glam metal was peaking and speedmetal had fragmented much of the underground punk crowd, my conglomerate style usually went over everyone's head live, and I think this album showcased my enthusiasim before I actually had to start making money at this to eat!
Throughout the Summer of 1984 I gigged live all the time, then in the fall I took the time to set up and practice for a recording session using a borrowed 4-track. The material here was recored in various takes, with only three songs passing the test which went out as a promo to record labels. Theoria blasted this complete program out at a New Year's Eve Party to an appreciative crowd.
